Irene Wu - Allegory of the Cave

My first reaction to this reading is that, the notion of truth and reality is no longer one that is only present in the realm of philosophers. I think we are all philosophers in our own right. At this point in time, we know that seeing should not necessarily lead to believing. With the rapid changes of dynamics and the increasing ease of communication and obtaining information in our volatile world, it becomes easier to be disillusioned just as it is to be enlightened. Being artists, I am sure that we are seeking our own truths and realities. I don’t think one can ever be truly “enlightened,” however, as perceptions and the norms of society are constantly shifting. I think that one has to be on a continual search, if one wants to be able to relate to society. As artists, we have the ability to communicate with humans in a way that politics cannot, and in a way, that allows us to be leaders of a different frontier. However, I don’t think we have any obligations to anyone or anything except ourselves. Opinions are one thing, but who could possibly have enough ego to think themselves wise and impose their so-called wisdom on society besides those with a personal agenda?
