Kevin Keane Response: External Sources of Inspiration
This reading, External Sources of Inspiration, presents us with an alternative to internal inspiration. Different artist use different techniques for conjuring their ideas and making them into art. Some artists reflect different external ingredients in their artwork. One of the artists discussed was Scott Grieger who uses cultural symbols to develop his artwork. In his piece, Be Here Now!, Grieger takes a Nike swoosh and relates it to the Nazi swastika.
This gave me an idea for a piece that uses an external source as inspiration. The dollar sign became a symbol for what is going on in my life. Everything that influences my life becomes part of this piece. This same sort of influence is seen in William Kentridge’s work. He uses his traumatic experiences to develop his artwork. His work captures in detail the cruelty that he faced in South Africa. Some of external inspiration can also be traced back to his family as well. With each of the different artist their external influence are slightly different.
